Victim alleges coat torn, held hostage for 14 hours; Supreme Court asks police for CCTV footage

The Supreme Court has taken cognizance of the 14-hour police detention of a female lawyer in Noida. The lawyer has accused the Noida police of threats and harassment. She said, “On December 3rd, I went with my uniform and ID to file an FIR for an attack on my client. However, two police officers refused to register a case.”

I tried to call the police emergency response service. The police station’s CCTV was turned off. My client was beaten. On December 4th, I was detained for nearly 14 hours without any written reason. My head injuries are proof of what happened to me.

While in custody, a police officer tore my coat and began searching me. He threatened me with a gun and used obscene language. One officer said, “We see lawyers like you every night…”

This entire incident occurred at the Sector 126 police station in Noida. The woman lawyer filed a petition in the Supreme Court today, Friday. The court has summoned CCTV footage from the Noida Police in a sealed envelope for the relevant period. The court has also issued notices to the central government, the Uttar Pradesh government, and the Noida Police, seeking their responses. The court will next hear the case on January 7th.

The court said – they will not dare to touch him now.

After the notice was issued to Noida Police, senior advocate Singh raised the issue of the petitioner’s safety, then the bench said in clear words – after passing this order, they will not dare to touch him.

The court asked, “Why didn’t you go to the High Court?”

The bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice N.V. Anjaria first asked the petitioner’s lawyer, “If you live in Noida, why didn’t you go to the Allahabad High Court?” The court later agreed to hear the case, considering the seriousness of the matter.

Senior Advocate Vikas Singh, representing the petitioner’s lawyer, told the court that police officers turned off the CCTV cameras and sexually assaulted the lawyer at the police station. He requested that the CCTV footage be seized before it is deleted.

Senior Advocate Mahalakshmi Pavani, also appearing for the petitioner, stated that police officers had seized her client’s mobile phone and deleted all videos. She expressed concern that the lawyer’s life was in danger.

The court ordered the Noida Police Commissioner to seal the CCTV cameras

. The court said that if it heard the case under Article 32 of the Constitution, cases from all over Delhi would start coming here. This article gives the right to appeal directly to the Supreme Court.

Senior Advocate Vikas Singh urged the court to treat this as a test case, arguing that if this is happening in Noida, imagine the situation across the country.

The court said, “Although we would have encouraged the petitioner to approach the High Court, the petitioner has raised very serious allegations and, given that the matter regarding the installation and proper functioning of CCTV cameras in police stations is pending before the court, we will hear this matter.” The court subsequently listed the case for hearing on January 7, 2026.

Advocate Vikas Singh also informed the court that the issue of installing CCTV cameras in police stations and their proper functioning is already pending before the Supreme Court. Therefore, this case could be treated as a test case.

He said, “This should send a message to the entire country that such behavior against a lawyer is absolutely wrong. The court directed the Gautam Buddha Nagar Police Commissioner to ensure that the footage of the incident is not deleted and to seal it.”
